Pamering: Spa Break

After the busy Christmas period, I often find myself in desperate need of relaxation and rejuvenation, but with a drained bank account, a pampered spa break can seem out of reach. Nothing puts me off more than the idea of spending over £100 for a day trip, but with the emerging multitude of spas around the country offering luxurious experiences, there has been a growth of e-tailors offering discount prices. Websites such as lastminute.com and booking.com are excellent for providing independent guides to the best experiences and not only can you buy vouchers for spa breaks, but you can book online. Recently, I took the opportunity to use lastminute.com and found a list of reasonably priced deals and 2-for-1 offers. It didn’t take long to come across an apt experience that wasn’t too far away and with 60% off, it was hard to resist.

Titanic Spa, UK’s first Eco-Spa, has been designed within a traditional textile mill to create an incomparable experience. The spa is favoured for its seclusion on the edge of the Pennines, located in Huddersfield. The spa offers products by DeclĂ©or, Elemis and Carita which work naturally with the therapies to relax, soothe and rejuvenate the skin, body and mind and the resort states that ‘attentive and individualised service is the hallmark of Titanic Spa’. The package I chose cost £90 (with the 60% off) and was well worth the discounted price. Alongside a 50 minute massage or facial, the experience included full use of the heat experience rooms, TechnoGym™, 15m salt regulated swimming pool, hydrozone, poolside steam room and relaxation areas. In addition, the break included overnight accommodation in a spacious apartment, a breakfast hamper, buffet lunch and two course evening meal in the Bistro; all prepared beautifully.

On arriving, the atmosphere is one of tranquillity, with cool greens and browns and neutral stone. Upon checking in, our bags were instantaneously spirited up to the apartment and we were given a private tour of the establishment before following our bags up to the room to change. Spectacularly, the apartments were spacious, light and airy and added to the tranquil effect. With an amazing view through a two-storey window, I could see the changing sky from my bed. For one night, it was really more than necessary, as it included everything from a microwave to a toaster with cupboards full of plates and glasses, but all we were going to do was sleep in it. After changing into our bathing suits, robes and slippers, we returned to the spa and for hard work-out in the gym and swim in the soft (salt regulated) pool, which was enough of a size to get a proper swim in, and has changing lights in the ceiling which add to that sense of peace.

The heat experience is a sheer haven of tranquillity, with soft, peaceful music and a mosaic interior. The series of rooms is arranged in a circle around a central pillar containing various showers so you can work your way round each experience from the footbaths to the sauna, the ice room to the crystal steam room, saunarium and plunge pool. The ice room, with its ice fountain and delicious chilled flannels are a perfect way to relax and rejuvenate the body. You could happily spend a couple of hours in the Heat Experience, sampling the different temperatures and atmospheres. On top of the heat experience, it was great to have a hands-on treatment by one of the therapists. I chose to have a full-body massage, which was very professional and enjoyable and I came out feeling completely relaxed and peaceful. There is a relaxation room by the therapy rooms, where you can hang on to this feeling and throw yourself into the beanbag pit or soft loungers and rehydrate. The only problem is that it is very tempting to book another treatment as the selection is so vast, ranging from Hamman to manicures, facials and waxing, but the prices are steep and cost almost as much as the experience itself. In my opinion, the experience is plenty without additional treatments so I wouldn’t say they are essential.

With the growth of such e-tailors as lastminute.com, it’s becoming easier and easier to find great experiences at great prices, and the beginning of the year is the best time to find the cheapest prices. The experience I chose just after Christmas is now half the price I paid. So go ahead, relax and unwind without burning a hole in your pocket.
